A nation divided

The Brexit vote was billed to be a turning point for the United Kingdom. After 43 years in the European Union, the United Kingdom would now work towards negotiating a departure deal with the EU. This created a division in the UK with such a narrow result of 51.9% leave, and 48.1% remain. This division would soon become apparent on the streets of the nations capital.

The Brexit vote was billed to be a turning point for the United Kingdom. After 43 years in the European Union, the United Kingdom would now work towards negotiating a departure deal with the EU. This created a division in the UK with such a narrow result of 51.9% leave and 48.1% remain. This division would soon become apparent on the streets of the nation's capital. With millions turning out in protest on both sides of the Brexit divide, the confrontation on the streets of London increased, at times in a hostile way.

Documenting these events became a daily and weekly event, pounding the streets, following the protests as they went, waiting patiently outside the Palace of Westminster for events inside to unfold and watching as people and families at times faced off against each other.

The years following the Brexit vote have been anything but ordinary and the future is still unknown. After all the protests, shouting and fighting, only one thing remains certain.

Britain will leave the European Union and things will never be the same again.

The People's Vote was a United Kingdom campaign group that, when formed, campaigned for a second EU-referendum following the UK's Brexit vote to leave the European Union in 2016.

The group was launched in April 2018 at which four Members of Parliament spoke, along with the actor Patrick Stewart and other public figures. In the years that followed, The People's Vote would organise demonstrations in London that were reported to have been attended by over a million people at one event. This would make it one of the biggest protest marches that the UK has ever seen on the streets of London.

SODEM

Stand of Defiance European Movement was started by Steven Bray in September 2017. He organised a 'Day of Action' on the day MPs returned from their summer recess.

He wanted an event where like-minded people could come together in defiance against the way they'd been disenfranchised. People traveled from across the UK. This protest gained the attention of the public and the media and following this SODEM was born.

The Day of Action quickly transformed into the "Daily Parliament Protest". Being outside Parliament to oppose Brexit and show support to the MPs and Lords fighting on their behalf. It sent a clear message both to the public and the politicians that Brexit is not the will of the people and it is OK to say so.

Steven Bray was outside Parliament from 11am - 6pm every day that MPs were in session.

Over a period of months, the Prime Minister at the time, Theresa May, put her 'deal' to the parliamentary vote. Each time it was defeated, with numerous amendments to the bill.

MPs from both sides tried to block the Prime Minister's deal from succeeding. At the same time, outside the Palace of Westminster, the protesters watched on their phones with their breath held.

As the remain groups began to grow in size, the Pro-Brexit groups also began to show their displeasure at the way the Government was handling the Brexit negotiations.

Many believed that the UK should leave with no-deal. This was seen on the placards around the gates of the Palace of Westminster each day, with numbers growing as time went on.

Theresa May announced in May 2019 that she would be stepping down as the UK Prime minister in June that year. Her resignation triggered a Conservative Party leadership election to begin.

In July 2019, Boris Johnson won the leadership race. Beating his nearest rival by nearly double the votes, he became the new Conservative Party leader and therefore the new Prime Minister of the United Kingdom.

The 29th March 2019 was meant to be the day that the United Kingdom left the European Union. Following the parliamentary indecision and the Prime Ministers failure to pass the Brexit withdrawal Bill through the House, the 29th March 2019 turned out to be the Brexit day that never was.

Crowds gathered in Parliament Square to celebrate Brexit and protest to the Government on their handling of the Brexit process.
